About
Street Fighter is a fighting game developed by Capcom and released to arcades on August 30, 1987. It follows a lone martial artist travelling the world to face ten opponents in one-on-one combat, staged in the United States, Japan, China, England and Thailand. Its six-button control scheme, with pressure-sensitive pads for the strength of each blow, became a standard the genre never shook off.
The game introduced the world to Ryu and Ken, and to the shoryuken and hadouken that would echo through every sequel. U.S. Gold published home conversions for systems including the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari ST, MS-DOS and Amstrad CPC, with a TurboGrafx-16 version arriving later in Japan. Its two-player matches and globe-trotting tournament format laid the foundation for the Street Fighter franchise.
